About Jeanette Burrage
Education
College-We need more college classrooms. Our population has expanded and our classroom capacity has not kept up. This will be a more long term solution than dividing up existing class spaces between people.
K-12 and preschool
I believe our resources will be better targeted to educational excellence if we give first graders adequate individual attention when they are learning the basics.
Many years ago I reviewed a study after asking a school superintendent what evidence she had of all day kindergarten was helpful. That study found that any extra knowledge gained by all day kindergarten was lost by third grade. It also found that having a helper in a first grade classroom had a longer lasting effect.
In other parts of the country where education vouchers are used they create an up-grade in learning. Here in Washington we can create a voucher system so parents have a greater choice of where to send their children to school. This competition will result in better education programs overall.
Also we need to expand the charter school program. The current chatter schools have better results than the public schools. Since the charter schools have less funding than the public schools, these are remarkable results.
Race Relations
There are two world views about racism in the United States. One is that we are all brothers and sisters and should respect and care for one another. The other view is that all white people are oppressors and all black people are victims. It is a belief in “systemic racism.” Under this view all people are divided into tribes and pitted against each other.
We do have systemic problems in our country, but they are not because of racism. They are the result of a decline in moral values and pilling liberal policies on top of liberal policies.
Which ever side you fall on in this area should be what you teach your children.
That freedom is being taken away from parents in Washington State. A bill was passed in 2021 that requires all school directors and school personnel must be trained in the oppression view. They call it identity and diversity.
I was a Superior Court Judge from 1995-2001. During that time the Judicial Minority and Justice Commission did a study regarding sentencing. It found negligible differences in sentencing based on the color of one’s skin.
One reason for the excellent results may have been because of the Sentencing Reform Act of 1981. I was in the State Legislature at that time and helped pass that bill through committee and on the floor of the House.
That law requires judges to sentence offenders within a predetermined range based on the severity of the crime and the number of previous crimes. Judges may sentence outside the range for certain circumstances that have to be written out and can be reviewed by a Court of Appeals.
If it is logical to conclude that the problems of failed learning in some schools are because of the way they are run and operated, then changes in policies need to be made.
The State of Washington and many city governments have been under the control of liberal politicians for many years. The Seattle School District is controlled by liberals and has been for decades.
All teachers in Washington State must earn a degree in teaching and work under a seasoned teacher for a period of time to learn and be evaluated. There are a few exceptions where schools have difficulty finding teachers in certain fields, and exceptions are made. The teachers are all well trained.
We need to encourage parents to get involved in their children’s education and to focus resources to where additional staff is needed. One way to stimulate changes is to create a voucher system where parents can use their vouchers to send their children to public or private schools. As in other areas, competition will require school officials to change their systems to best accommodate students needs.
School Bus Incident
In 2015 Jeanette was a school bus driver. The district placed on her bus a student she had never seen before who was supposed to only ride in a van with a monitor. That student had been violent toward adults in the past, but Jeanette was not informed about that.
The child stood up on his seat and the bus was stopped to get him to sit down for his safety. Jeanette went back to his seat and looked over the back of the seat in front of him. As her head was coming up and he was still standing on the seat he smacked her hard in the face. Her body reacted before she knew she was hit.
It appeared in a video that she may have made contact with the student with her hand. As was explained by Jeanette and an expert witness at the trial, she was not conscious of her actions immediately after being unexpectedly hit in the face. The jury unanimously found her not guilty of assault.
